Galloping Vibration Monitoring of Overhead Transmission Lines by Chirped FBG Array

Abstract A distributed online fiber sensing system based on the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (?-OTDR) enhanced by drawing tower Bragg grating (FBG) array is presented and investigated experimentally for monitoring galloping of overhead transmission lines. The chirped FBG ?-OTDR can be used to measure behavior lines (optical phase conductor or power ground wire), which are helpful frequency response characteristics ice-induced galloping, evaluating motion tendencies these cables, avoiding risk flashover during galloping. feasibility proposed demonstrated through a series experiments at Special Optical Fiber Cable Laboratory State Grid Corporation China (Beijing, China). Results show that effective reliable shape characteristic frequency, predict trend destructive vibration avoid occurrence cable breaking toppling accidents, features essential safety operation in smart grids.
